A mala is a strand of beads traditionally used to count breaths or mantras, by running your fingers over the beads during meditation. It is made up of 108 beads plus a central bead (guru bead) and sometimes a tassel. Any types of beads can be used during meditation, but gemstones do have meanings and properties which can help you choose an emotional or spiritual aspect of your meditation. And wearing your mala in other contexts serves to remind you of those aspects. Thus a mala is an effective tool for focusing the mind, bringing intention to your spiritual practice (as well as being rather lovely to wear). You can of course wear a mala even if you don't practice meditation. And if you would like a custom-made mala, please contact me.
